Hiring Out-of-State Photographers | JayLee M.O.

Choosing your wedding photographer is a big decision. It can feel even more complicated if you are having your wedding in a different state, are planning to elope, or simply fell in love with a photographer’s work who happens to live elsewhere. Hiring an out-of-state photographer for your wedding is entirely do-able and doesn’t have to be stressful. In fact, we encourage it. Here are 4 helpful tips:Destination Wedding Photographers

1. Look at the pictures first. When we look at the hits we get on our website and blog, many of them are from different states. So, when readers get to our site, they see this: Seattle | Phoenix | Destination. Sadly, people may immediately write us off as an option before even looking at the pictures (if they don’t live in Seattle or Phoenix). The initial fear is probably the travel costs. So, we implore you to instead consider taking the extra step, poking around and seeing if the style and photographer’s personality resonates with you. If it caught your eye enough to check it out, it may be worth considering and at least looking at the pricing. Just one extra click…

Remy Turns 3 | Birthday Party

This adorable birthday party, for the equally adorable birthday girl, was designed entirely by her super-mom Kristi who runs the handmade toy store Schnitzel and Boo . Not only did she make the rainbow birthday cake; she made all of the sweets, favors, and the paper crafts for the dessert table. Isn’t the rainbow theme awesome!?

What To Wear {Inspiration} | JayLee M.O.

We answered some great engagement session questions in a previous JayLee M.O. post, but wanted to expand a bit on a question we get a lot: what to wear. There have been a lot of guides created on this very topic, but many of the styles don’t seem to reflect our target demographic at all. So, we decided to marry style-blogger sensibilities with our “what to wear” segment, to hopefully assist our clients in brainstorming ideas for their sessions.

We aren’t about to say we have the same style as you…in fact, we probably don’t. As an avid style blog stalker and Pinterest addict, I have found a good way to start is to find some celebrity icons or blogs that reflect your style. We aren’t huge fans of matchy-matchy, but making sure you look good together as a couple in your photos without any weird clashing colors or patterns makes our jobs easier. Still stumped? If you have a session with us and need some assistance choosing outfits, we will ask some simple questions and begin finding options for you!

Tricia + Justin | Ferry Ride Engagement

Choosing a location that is visually appealing and meaningful can be a little difficult for engagement sessions. So, when we get to work with a couple like Tricia and Justin we are plain stoked about it. In her words:

Our idea is to do our session on the ferry!! This would be special for us because it is how you get between where I’m from (Seattle side) and where Justin is from (Peninsula side) and we have spent a lot of time on ferry rides together over the years, traveling between our two hometowns and families. We love that it is a very “Seattle” thing (we do like living in NC but miss Seattle a LOT sometimes!) and I think the water and city views from the ferry are almost unbeatable.”
Josh and I had never been on the Bainbridge Ferry, so we had a really great time (and it’s true, the view is great all around). Tricia and Justin were so easy to work with and interacted very naturally in front of the camera. We can’t wait for their wedding! //Ali + Josh

Why What You Believe Matters | JayLee M.O.

When it’s inconsequential, business owners can be pretty outspoken. But when it’s big… like, political, life-changing big, they tend to keep their mouths shut. A few minutes in the twitterverse of the photography industry will show mountains of opinions of the newest gear, whether the vintage filter is a trend or something of the future, or if the latest workshop is worth the $3000 entry fee, but when folks start talking about real-world stuff, they’re painfully silent.

And that is one of the many areas that we’re proud to break the mold.

Breanne+Chris | Portland Engagement Photographer

Breanne and Chris have had our attention from the second they first wrote us. A 3-day family reunion in Mormon Lake, AZ culminating with their marriage celebration? Yeah. We’re there. Don’t have to ask us twice. When we had our Skype meeting with them they said something so moving we knew this was the perfect fit:

“yeah, the wedding is going to be an awesome day, but we’ve already had awesome days together and we’ll have awesome days after the wedding….”

And that is the heart of what we do. We love photographing the day you make your vows to each other. We love documenting the culmination of your plannings and families smashing together. But the absolute highest priority in our photos is catching the moment you swear to commit your lives to each other and the moment that “officially” starts. It’s like these two dug deep into our heartstrings and snatched us up.

So, while on a Christmas vacation to Portland we took a detour to Colton, OR and snapped these crazy kids on Breanne’s family’s Christmas Tree farm. A Christmas Tree Farm!?!?!? Get. Out. Of. HERE!!!!!

So here is the beautiful collision of their obvious lovin’ and the awesomeness of the Oregon countryside. Hope it rawks your sock as much as it did ours.

Working With Your Spouse | Newlywed Post

We aren’t really experts and wouldn’t claim to be, but from what we can tell, working with your spouse isn’t for everyone. In the wedding photography biz, we know of many his-and-her, his-and-his, and her-and-her teams. Surely each couple works together a bit differently, and the dynamic is not the same for everyone. We have had a lot of clients tell us they would go nuts working together…and yeah, that makes some sense.

We are coming up on our busiest summer yet (exciting!) and we are lucky enough to be wrapping up this season with some great engagement sessions and special projects. Once summer time rolls around, we will be working together even more frequently while juggling travel, shooting for long days, editing a heavy load, shipping/packaging materials, and so on. Here are the challenges as we’ve seen them, when it comes to working with your spouse, and our top 10 suggestions for overcoming them.

What We Shoot | JayLee M.O.

Short answer…anything. Pretty much. We use cameras, not guns (though, we are both a pretty good shot). We are mainly wedding+engagement photographers, but people ask us pretty often what we shoot. So, here’s a random sampling of photos in one blog post, though it doesn’t mean we’re not missing something. We have shot weddings, engagements, anniversary sessions, vow-renewals, trash-the-dress, fashion/models, maternity, babies, kids, seniors, events, bands/shows, corporate, boudoir, landscapes/places, pets, vendor products, styled shoots, and our personal life. Seriously, what do you need photographed? We will do it. Please say it’s somewhere far away or something terribly cool? Or close by and semi-cool is fine, too.
