Marsha+Doug | Seattle Anniversary Photography

Marsha reached out to us over facebook because they were fast-approaching their 20th Anniversary and they didn't have much in the way of "nice" photos of her and Doug together (a fact that Doug's mother had mentioned a handful of times). So we joined them at this neat little park in Ballard that had a concrete living room in it (seriously!), and moseyed around the neighborhood enjoying the last bits of Fall before the cold of Seattle winter moved in.

They are absolutely hilarious and adorable together and made our jobs very easy that afternoon, as you can see in every one of their photos. //Josh+Ali

1 Year of Marriage | Anniversary

Yesterday was my 25th birthday… Josh surprised me with a wonderful dinner at home, candles on a tiramisu cake, a day of shopping and a beautiful succulent plant. It’s funny to think that a year ago, I was sick on my birthday hoping I would get better before our wedding the next day!

I woke up this morning remembering our wedding day, and kind of missing it too. The first year of our marriage has gone by so quickly, and quite opposite of what “they” say… it has not been the hardest year we’ve gone through together. Instead, we have had a ton of fun building our business and more importantly, just enjoying time together. More and more, I am realizing what it will mean to spend my life with this wonderful man and I am just so lucky. I did marry my best friend, the most thoughtful person, the one who makes me laugh the most. I can’t wait to see what the next 60+ years together hold… exciting trips around the world and simple moments of reading next to each other in bed.

Now, we are headed off to Leavenworth for a little getaway…so I better cut this short. //Ali

{The first anniversary is the “paper” year. I made Josh an eye chart print with an important section of our vows that we both coincidentally said. Josh gave me a leather journal to jot down memories from our second year of marriage and a book of poems. Oh, and Rufus is just always there.}

Dawn+Jeff | Phoenix, AZ

One of my favorite sessions to date, I met up with Dawn and Jeff on a particularly sweltering day the last time I was in Phoenix to catch up, talk about marriage and take a couple photos. This awesome pair will have been married for 30 years this September, so, a recent newlywed myself, I spent the majority of our time together asking them tons of questions about marriage, kids, sacrifice, love and commitment through all those years.

And these two know all about commitment. In June of 2009 Jeff was diagnosed with Early Onset Alzheimer’s Disease. While the disease has progressed rapidly and been quite a shock to the family, Dawn and Jeff refuse to let it define who they are as individuals AND together. They both absolutely love hiking (in Phoenix, which is a calling in and of itself) and have an absolutely refreshing sense of humor (they joked about the “upsides of Alzheimer’s”… like not having to drive in Phoenix rush hour traffic any more). In a society where marriages and relationships are ending as quickly and conveniently as a couple of signatures on some paperwork, there is a certain type of joy and solace to be taken, especially as a newly married guy, in two people fighting against all odds, embracing the hands they’re dealt and holding strong to each other for the support they need to face such trials.

Dawn and Jeff, thank you SO much for giving me the opportunity to document your memories. I am so encouraged, blessed and changed for being a part of your lives, especially at these moments, and I hope in these images you see those two crazy kids that fell in love 30 years ago. I know I sure do.//Josh
