May Day Protests | Occupy Seattle | Change of Pace

Yesterday morning I woke up to news about riots and window smashings and found out that, though I usually have a finger to the pulse of what’s going on around the world, I absolutely missed the May Day Protests until they were happening. After evening plans fell through I got a wild hair to drag my gear downtown, brave the mobs and document the heck out of the heyday.

The only problem is… I’m a bit of a wimp when it comes to putting myself in danger (says the guy whose been photographed hanging off bridges, standing knee deep in rapid waters, etc) so it wasn’t until I got a text from a particularly intimidating friend of mine to “get my back” that I reigned in the wimpyness and trekked to 4th and Pine.

And I’m glad I did.

There aren’t a lot of words for what I saw. I will say I missed the insanity that started the day, and thankfully (for public safety, not for the drama of the photographs) it didn’t fire back up later in the day. Blame it on the rain, maybe. What  I did experience was a fascinating collision of passion and hypocrisy, cause and chaos.

Here’s a bit of what I saw.

{ disclaimer: as with most protests, there was a substantial amount of obscenity in language, signs and gestures, all of which I documented and included in the pictures below. So if middle fingers and four-letter words offend you, consider this your warning. }

Being "In the Moment" On Your Wedding Day | JayLee M.O.

Most of us know what that “auto-pilot zone” feels like in day-to-day life. We do what we need to. We drive where we need to drive. We do the laundry. We cook dinner. We accidentally read 5 pages of our book before realizing we didn’t really read five pages of our book. There are so many times during the day that we are not really “present”. Our minds are elsewhere, or we are so focused on the task at hand that we aren’t really enjoying that very moment. It sound cheesy, but it is ultimately true if you want to lead a happy life… you should try to enjoy the process of going after a goal as much as you will enjoy accomplishing it.

For that reason, I believe that when it comes to big events in life, we should be ready. We should enjoy the moments leading up to the bigger moment (in this case, the planning process and being engaged) as much as we will enjoy getting married. On the day of the wedding, we should be fully immersing ourselves in the joy of each second of that day. Wedding days go by really quickly…. everyone says it, because it’s true! Here are a few tips on staying present and in the moment on your wedding day (and maybe they can apply to other areas of your life as well)!

Your Wedding Timeline | JayLee M.O.

So, let me preface this by saying that talking about wedding-day timelines tends to freak couples out a little bit when we even mention them in a meeting. Most couples book us up to a year before their wedding, so it only makes sense that the details are not ironed out yet! After you have booked with us, you will get a friendly little e-mail about a month before the big day, asking for your timeline. Pretty much, as long as you send it to us before the day of the wedding, you’re golden. So, breathe easy!

This summer, we are shooting some super-untraditional weddings. We personally love this fact. It makes our jobs fun, and more importantly, customized wedding timelines make a lot of sense because they should suit you specifically as a couple rather than some pre-determined way of of doing things.

However relaxed your day may be, please do still write out a timeline. If you are lucky enough to have a wedding planner or day-of coordinator, utilize them as a resource in helping you develop a timeline that works for you. When it comes to photography, we pretty much just follow the couple around all day, but a timeline helps us to know if we need to split up at any time and where you need extra coverage. Here are a few things we like to know before your wedding day: {Skip to the end for a sample timeline.}

What To Wear {Inspiration} | JayLee M.O.

Here’s another “What To Wear” post for you! This week, we did four looks from a female and four from a male to be mixed and matched for couples as needed.

I could easily wear all of character Ashley Davenport from Revenge‘s outfits (yeah…I have my eye on the red skirt)…I love that she wears bold pops of color like bright red, mustard yellow, turquoise, emerald green, and coral. For casual looks, she wears a monogramed “a” necklace, and for night events she wears larger statement pieces. Ashley also has a personal style blog too that has some fun stuff on it!

A good friend of mine recently posted a photo of Gabriel Macht on Pinterest that reminded me he has rocked some great fashion inspiration on Suits and Because I Said So. Both characters sport master pattern mixing. I especially love the the vintage plaid blazer and plaid shirt, and the second suit look with three mixed stripe patterns! Links to all of the items are listed below (and available to buy as of right now). I try to find cheaper alternatives to the real thing – or as close as possible- and create attainable options.Thanks for reading and be sure to let us know of some fashion icons you would like to see on the blog! //Ali Ashley Davenport Revenge, Ashley Davenport Style, What to Wear photography, what to wear inspiration, photography inspiration, style guide photography, spring style guide photography, seattle engagement photographer, seattle couple photographer, seattle lgbt photographer what to wear

Hiring Out-of-State Photographers | JayLee M.O.

Choosing your wedding photographer is a big decision. It can feel even more complicated if you are having your wedding in a different state, are planning to elope, or simply fell in love with a photographer’s work who happens to live elsewhere. Hiring an out-of-state photographer for your wedding is entirely do-able and doesn’t have to be stressful. In fact, we encourage it. Here are 4 helpful tips:Destination Wedding Photographers

1. Look at the pictures first. When we look at the hits we get on our website and blog, many of them are from different states. So, when readers get to our site, they see this: Seattle | Phoenix | Destination. Sadly, people may immediately write us off as an option before even looking at the pictures (if they don’t live in Seattle or Phoenix). The initial fear is probably the travel costs. So, we implore you to instead consider taking the extra step, poking around and seeing if the style and photographer’s personality resonates with you. If it caught your eye enough to check it out, it may be worth considering and at least looking at the pricing. Just one extra click…
