Hello, Whitney!!!

whitney-1

What a lot of other photographers won’t tell you is that, when you upgrade to their second shooter option, most of the time you’re getting a random photographer that they haven’t decided on until a week before your wedding. I know, we feel like the masked magician on those “Secret of Magic” shows right now, but we can’t tell you how many times, to our absolute horror, we’ve seen photographers throw out a TWITTER BLAST on a Tuesday looking for a 2nd shooter for a wedding on Saturday. Seriously, this happens, and you’re paying these people hundreds-to-thousands of dollars to capture some memories for you.

And we’re sure they hire capable photographers and we’re sure that business practice works for them, but we respect our clients too much to bring some faceless rando to their wedding, which is why we decided to make JayLee into a four-person team two years ago and give us the ability to tell our clients that we’re bringing a specific person, trained, branded, and awesome, to their wedding. No twitter blasts for us.

In our first year we brought on Sean and Jeni and could not have been more thrilled about their being onboard. They were 100% Team JayLee, shot lights-out, and gave our lovely clients the most incredible experience they could ask for. This year, Jeni broadened her horizons past weddings+portraiture, and we were all kinds of bummed to lose her (as you may have seen yesterday), so the task fell on us to find the newest member of our Team and get back to rocking your socks.

Enter Whitney. Her energy is infectious. Seriously. She laughs incessantly (even at Sean’s jokes) and takes some really incredible photos. We’re so ridiculously obsessive over our brand and our clients, so when we put that in another photographer’s hands you know they’re the best there is, and Whitney is no exception. We’re so looking forward to an awesome year of watching her rock all your socks off.

So, help us welcome Whitney to the JayLee Family, find out some more random factoids on her page, and keep an eye out for her work. Here we go, 2014. //Josh+Ali

We recently had a housewarming/ugly sweater party, with a a pretty fun photo booth set up in our new office. There were prizes for the 3 ugliest sweaters and first place won a mix of x-mas songs. We put some of them in a playlist for you below, along with this year’s family photo!

We hope you have a wonderful holiday season filled with family, friends, and apple cider! We are off to see the Nutcracker tonight…yay! //Josh, Ali, and Rufus

Leavenworth Anniversary | Newlywed Post

For our one year anniversary, we drove up to Leavenworth and spent a couple of days there relaxing, shopping, and exploring. It was apparently the worst week to visit because the weather was dreary and cold, but it was kind of fun having the entire town nearly all to ourselves. The views on the way are extremely pretty, and we had a great time snapping pictures throughout our trip. You can find a list of our favorite spots at the bottom of this post! //Josh+Alileavenworth, husband and wife blog, seattle wedding photographers, seattle portrait photographers, anniversary trip, trips to leavenworth, views leavenworth

1 Year of Marriage | Anniversary

Yesterday was my 25th birthday… Josh surprised me with a wonderful dinner at home, candles on a tiramisu cake, a day of shopping and a beautiful succulent plant. It’s funny to think that a year ago, I was sick on my birthday hoping I would get better before our wedding the next day!

I woke up this morning remembering our wedding day, and kind of missing it too. The first year of our marriage has gone by so quickly, and quite opposite of what “they” say… it has not been the hardest year we’ve gone through together. Instead, we have had a ton of fun building our business and more importantly, just enjoying time together. More and more, I am realizing what it will mean to spend my life with this wonderful man and I am just so lucky. I did marry my best friend, the most thoughtful person, the one who makes me laugh the most. I can’t wait to see what the next 60+ years together hold… exciting trips around the world and simple moments of reading next to each other in bed.

Now, we are headed off to Leavenworth for a little getaway…so I better cut this short. //Ali

{The first anniversary is the “paper” year. I made Josh an eye chart print with an important section of our vows that we both coincidentally said. Josh gave me a leather journal to jot down memories from our second year of marriage and a book of poems. Oh, and Rufus is just always there.}

Ali’s Art Show | Personal Post

Josh was kind enough to snap some photos at my art show. If you didn’t know, I went to school for painting and it is a true love of mine.

I am now working on some smaller abstract pieces to hopefully show next month in West Seattle. If you’re interested, you can follow my work here. . // Ali

May Day Protests | Occupy Seattle | Change of Pace

Yesterday morning I woke up to news about riots and window smashings and found out that, though I usually have a finger to the pulse of what’s going on around the world, I absolutely missed the May Day Protests until they were happening. After evening plans fell through I got a wild hair to drag my gear downtown, brave the mobs and document the heck out of the heyday.

The only problem is… I’m a bit of a wimp when it comes to putting myself in danger (says the guy whose been photographed hanging off bridges, standing knee deep in rapid waters, etc) so it wasn’t until I got a text from a particularly intimidating friend of mine to “get my back” that I reigned in the wimpyness and trekked to 4th and Pine.

And I’m glad I did.

There aren’t a lot of words for what I saw. I will say I missed the insanity that started the day, and thankfully (for public safety, not for the drama of the photographs) it didn’t fire back up later in the day. Blame it on the rain, maybe. What  I did experience was a fascinating collision of passion and hypocrisy, cause and chaos.

Here’s a bit of what I saw.

{ disclaimer: as with most protests, there was a substantial amount of obscenity in language, signs and gestures, all of which I documented and included in the pictures below. So if middle fingers and four-letter words offend you, consider this your warning. }

Newlywed Post | Ali's Art Show

We’ve been mighty busy over here the last few weeks, some of us more than others. Ali has been deep in the trenches working on four (huge!) paintings she’ll be showing tomorrow (!!!!) at the 4th Annual Isis: Women Arts Festival in Ballard. The show is 7-10 pm on Saturday and they’ll be hanging through the weekend. If you’re in the area you should totally come hang with us tomorrow night.
